PRESS RELEASE – The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Michelle Simmons AO to its Board of Directors.
A former Australian of the Year, Professor Simmons is a globally recognised quantum physicist and deep-tech entrepreneur, CEO and Founder of the world-leading Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC), which was spun out of the University of New South Wales.
Professor Simmons is a leading voice in Australia’s efforts to enhance sovereign capability in emerging and critical technologies. Her vast experience will ensure the TCA continues to support a diverse range of tech companies, from startups to multinationals.
TCA Chair Scott Farquhar said Professor Simmons’ experience will be an important addition to the Board, especially for the nation’s burgeoning quantum industry.
“Michelle’s extensive experience in quantum computing and commercialisation brings a unique perspective and capability to our leadership team. Her appointment will help the TCA support the growth of the Australian quantum industry and deep tech,” he said.
CEO of the TCA, Damian Kassabgi said Professor Simmons’ expertise would be invaluable to the Board, which also includes leaders from software, fintech, AI and digital platforms.
“Michelle is a respected voice across industry, research, and the commercial sector, known for her ability to communicate complex ideas. We are looking forward to drawing on her expertise to help shape and advance our advocacy and policy work,” he said.
Professor Simmons is a founding member of the TCA’s Australian Quantum Alliance (AQA), which is dedicated to creating a thriving domestic quantum industry enabling innovation, jobs and economic prosperity.
“It is an honour to be joining the TCA board at a time when our nation’s technology sector is at an inflection point. Technology is a vital pillar of our economy, and I look forward to working with the TCA,” Professor Simmons said.
