Insider Brief:

  • Ilana Wisby has joined Moth as CEO, bringing her leadership experience from Oxford Quantum Circuits to the consumer-facing quantum technology startup.
  • Moth intends to make quantum technologies accessible to the public, and Wisby’s appointment signals a focus on scaling infrastructure and launching user-focused products.
  • Wisby is expected to carry forward her advocacy for ethical, inclusive innovation as she leads Moth into a new phase of growth and public engagement.

Ilana Wisby, one of the more recognizable figures in the quantum computing industry, has officially joined Moth as CEO. The company, which describes itself as the first and only consumer-facing quantum technologies company, announced the leadership move as part of its plan to accelerate growth and bring quantum capabilities directly to users.

Moth shared the news in a company statement on LinkedIn: “We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Ilana Wisby as CEO to lead Moth into its next phase of accelerated growth. As the first and only consumer-facing quantum technologies company, Moth is on a bold mission to become one of the most influential quantum companies in the world. Ilana is one of the most respected and recognisable leaders in quantum computing, and we’re proud to have her at the helm as we scale our infrastructure and launch products that inspire, empower, and bring real value to our customers and partners.”

Wisby also announced the news on her personal LinkedIn, reflecting on how she sees the broader vision of quantum’s role in society: “Quantum’s next leap isn’t just technical — it’s creative, human, and full of heart. I’m proud to be joining Moth as CEO — where quantum meets imagination, science meets soul, and culture takes flight. Let’s build something extraordinary.”

The announcement comes just months after Wisby stepped down from her role as CEO of Oxford Quantum Circuits, the UK-based quantum hardware company she helped lead from spin-out to scale-up. In a January statement shared on LinkedIn, Wisby wrote: “After the most incredible six years, as we progress with our Series B, it is the right moment to step down and embark on a new journey.”

During her tenure at OQC, Wisby helped the company secure a $100 million Series B round, led by SBI Investment, and built a diverse, mission-driven team. Reflecting on her time there, she wrote: “With a diverse team built on love and the backing of amazing investors, we’ve achieved so much together. Working with such passionate and world-class colleagues has been an honour, and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Wisby is also known for her vocal advocacy on the ethical and inclusive development of quantum technologies. In a previous interview with The Quantum Insider, she said: “Of course, with any new type of technology, it can be used as a force for good or to exert a negative influence on the world. We need to be mindful of that risk from the beginning. We need to look back on history and learn from previous technological revolutions. And we need to agree principles to enable us to make the right, considered choices and take strong stances early on.”

At Moth, Wisby is expected to bring that same conviction and vision to a new type of quantum company—one that seeks to shift the paradigm by delivering quantum-enabled tools, experiences, or applications designed not just for researchers or enterprises, but for broader public use.

While details on Moth’s product roadmap remain limited, the company’s positioning suggests it is determined to redefine what it means to interact with quantum technologies—an area Wisby appears ready to lead.
